What is your full name and name of the business?

I’m Kathryn Mahan, Owner of Rainstorm Knits!

What is your favorite item(s) to sew?

I sew clothes for all sizes that celebrate nature, play, and the spirit of childhood! I love using ethically sourced and organic materials with unique prints and colors to handmake beautiful, long-lasting, and comfortable clothing. Grow-with-me clothes are among my favorites, as they fit growing children for such a long time!

At what age did you start sewing?

I started sewing when I was 16 or 17. I was given a Singer Heavy Duty and dozens of spools of colored thread. I thought sewing would be a good homesteading skill, and it has been! I learned by repairing clothes for friends, making curtains, skirts, and so on. Around the time I found out I was expecting my daughter, I learned to sew with knit fabric, and a whole other world opened up to me!

Where do you sell your sewing?

I sell online, mainly through my website: rainstormknits.com, and through Etsy: etsy.com/shop/rainstormknits. I welcome custom orders. I also have a selection of organic fabrics available for those who want to create something themselves!

What else would you like to share with our readers?

I love helping people find something they love. I have a passion for ecology (my day job), backpacking in the wilderness, gardening, and my family. The ethics of my company are much like the Leave-No-Trace ethics of backpackers: a way to find, share and celebrate natural beauty with minimum impact on the social and environmental systems around us. Receiving beauty feeds the soul, and doing so respectfully makes it possible for everyone!

I believe clothing should be comfortable, durable, safe, colorful, ethical, and environmentally friendly. I sew with patterns that have been thoroughly tested for comfort, safety, durability, and fit. My fabrics have ethical supply chains and low-toxicity printing and dyeing processes to minimize their environmental and health impacts.

As a backpacker, I am no stranger to hard work, and I bring this experience to Rainstorm Knits. I enjoy every minute of it, even when I’m exhausted, and I find just as much joy in tiny details of the stitching as I find in the beautiful view from the summit. I can’t wait to share this joy with you!
